Ok, did you see the routes?
The Europeans love spices, so they came to the spice islands to grab some spices.
Next, the Europeans want a easier transportation because they used the Land and Water transportation, and it takes longer time.
So they started to search for a water route...
The Portuguese found out a water trade route, but they kept it for themselves... ( see the red trade route )
So Europeans by that time should know the earth is round, so they decided to go the OTHER way to reach the spice islands...
And they hit America by Christopher Columbus,
and he thought he was in India,
therefore the place he reached was called West Indies for his mistake.
